Short hair can be fun! It can be, but it can also be a disaster for hair in your face, flat hair, and never knowing what to do with your hair. I've got fine straight hair (think the long straight extensions of last season, except mine is real) and absolutely nothing gives it body. Many short styles depend on body for the "look" to work, and I'd have to spend hours with hairspray and a curling iron to get the "look" to go with my haircut. Even simple chin length bobs don't work well on me.
If you do decide to go short, spend a fair amount of time learning how to fix your hair. Mess with it a lot, particularly with your stylist's help. Learn what products you need to make it react the way you want. The actual "look" IMO is less important than feeling like your hair behaves and looks good.
Also, make sure you pick a stylist you can trust. You may want to go shorter in increments, like get a cut that is three inches shorter than you are used to, wait a month, and then go a few inches shorter the next time.
