The Color Purple Tickets See A Classic Novel Come To Life On Stage
The Color Purple tickets are a chance to see a classic literary work presented in its third form. The original story was a 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winner written by Alice Walker. Hollywood got involved a few years later and produced a highly successful film in 1985 that was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. Now comes the musical, which Oprah Winfrey, who played an important part in the film, is helping to produce, and this story is as timeless as it gets.

About the Story

The musical centers on the life of Celie, an African-American woman whose life is a tale of trials and hardships based on the abuse she faces first from her father and then her husband. Celie spends her life in the Southern United States, and the story is set in the early 20th Century, a time when equal rights for both women and African-Americans were basically non-existent.

Celie has one true friend who loves her, and that’s her sister Nettie. Nettie is the “pretty” sister, and she has drawn the eye of Albert, the character who ultimately will become Celie’s husband. Albert wants to court Nettie, but her father refuses to allow it, as he feels that Nettie is too young at the time. Instead, he offers Celie to Albert, and Albert begrudgingly accepts and marries Celie.

Celie moves in with Albert, and Nettie comes to live with both of them. When Nettie refuses Albert’s overtures, he sends her away. Through the story, we learn that Nettie has been living in Africa working on a mission. However, due to the abuse of Albert, Nettie’s repeated letters are not discovered until much later in life. Celie feels for years that Nettie is lost. However, the next development in the plot is where The Color Purple tickets start to show their worth to anyone who uses them.

Celie must also deal with a rival, Shug Avery. Albert also wanted to marry Shug earlier in life but was refused. Shug comes back to Albert after alcohol has robbed her of her ability to function, and Celie is forced to care for her.

Even though Shug is initially a threat to Celie, the two ultimately forge a friendship that allows Celie to develop her individuality and to face her abusive husband. Celie learns several lessons from Shug, most importantly the value of self worth. Celie’s character develops throughout the story, and the climax of the story is as riveting as any story ever told.

The lessons and message communicated in this tale are several in number. Feminism, basic human rights, individuality and domestic abuse are just some of the themes covered in a story that has been seen as both uplifting and controversial due to the graphic nature of some of Celie’s experiences.

Ultimately, however, Celie’s tale is one of triumph and self-realization, and her ability to reach her potential as a human being has touched the heart of many readers, movie-goers and now thespians.
